The Coventry blitzby the Luftwaffe during the night of 14 November 1940 almost completely destroyed the 14th century Cathedral of St. Michael in central Coventry. More than 4,000 homes were destroyed and most of the factories in the city. Twenty-two years later on May 30 1962, a new cathedral was consecrated. It had been created beside the ruins by the British architect Basil Spence. Benjamin Britten, a conscientious objector after his return in 1942 from living in exile in America, was commissioned to write a Requiem for the consecration. His War Requiem was premiered on that occasion.
