The Fortress of   Venus Michael Moran In the summer of 1844 Chopin was at Nohant with George Sand, her children, his sister  Ludwika Jędrzejewicz and his sister's husband Kalasanty.  After they left to return to Warsaw he wrote a letter to her expressing his sense of loss at her departure: 'I feel strange this year [...] but I am not at all here at this moment, only as usual in some strange space. This must be  espaces imaginaires,  but I am not embarrassed by it.'   It is now exactly 50 years since I left civilization  as a young man  and went to live on a South Pacific Island. As we slowly approach the birthday of Fryderyk Chopin, the celebratory events begin to appear on the list like a regiment of Polish Hussars on parade. This recital was the first. A cloud hovers over the birth date of Fryderyk in a rather characteristic Polish way. The year 1810 is not seriously in dispute but the Chopin family insisted on March 1 while the baptismal certificate records a birth date of February 22 over which controversy still rages in the minds of some. Celebrations in Warsaw occur throughout the week which neatly covers all possibilities. He was brother to three intelligent and talented sisters. The National Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition  took place for the first time in 1968 and currently is one of the most important piano competition in Poland. Organised by The Fryderyk Chopin Institute, it is dedicated to Polish young musicians: students of the Academies of Music as well as the Secondary Schools of Music. It is carried out every year (with the exception of the years that precede the International Chopin Competition) and it can be a ticket to the participation in the international competition (the 1st and 2nd prize allow to take part in the International Chopin Competition without the first preliminary stage); many prizewinners of the national competition were successful later in the International Chopin Competition (Janusz Olejniczak, Krystian Zimerman, Ewa Pobłocka, Krzysztof Jabłoński, Wojciech Świtała, Rafał Blechacz).
